Invests in flashlights and stock up on extra batteries. Keep these in the same place.
The National Fire Prevention Association does NOT recommend candles; however, if you must use a candle, be sure to light in a safe area. (Keep candles and matches stored together.)
According to the National Fire Prevention Association: 1. Use candles that do not tip over easily. 2. Keep candles on a sturdy surface. 3. Do not burn the candle all the way down. Put it out before it gets too close to the candle holder. 4. Never use a candle if oxygen is used in the home.
Stock up on warm clothing and blankets.
Stock up on bottled water.
Fill up your tubs and sinks with water if you have an electric water pump.
Stock up on canned goods and dry foods.
Keep your electronics charged in advance of a storm.
Layered clothing is a great way to stay warm.
Routinely inspect and maintain your chimney and furnace and keep them clean.
Check the batteries on your smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detectors.
