Cracked walls & leaking roofs
For many years, Shree Bauddha Basic School in the serene village of Jhakribash, Khotang District, Nepal operated under deeply challenging conditions. The aftermath of the 2015 earthquake left two of the school’s primary buildings in disrepair, with cracked walls, leaking roofs, and broken floors. Despite the unwavering dedication of its teachers and students, the lack of safe and adequate infrastructure made teaching and learning a daily hardship. Yet, the spirit of the school community remained resilient, holding onto hope for a brighter, more dignified learning environment.
Serving around 80 students from a predominantly Tamang community, the school has long been a pillar of hope. Yet, despite the dedication of its eight teachers and countless attempts to make repairs, funding constraints made meaningful improvements impossible. It was a heartbreaking situation, especially for children trying to learn and dream in classrooms that felt more like ruins than safe learning spaces.
Classrooms That Say “You Matter”
In 2025, K&A Engineering Consulting joined forces with Action for Nepal (AFN), contributing NPR 500,000 (approx. $3700) to a renovation project also supported by CED Nepal France. With this funding, two severely damaged school buildings were completely rebuilt. What emerged was more than an infrastructure renovation project, it was a message of dignity, hope, and investment in the future.
Four classrooms were restored with proper lighting, whiteboards, secure doors and windows, and new desks and benches for students and teachers. Ceilings were added to block out the sound of monsoon rains.
For the first time, the school also gained access to clean drinking water via newly installed taps on the premises.
“I Feel Seen”: Krishak’s Story
Krishak Tamang, a teacher at Bauddha Basic School, recalls the frustration of teaching in dark, unsafe, and under-equipped classrooms. “There were no proper desks or benches—most of them were broken. The floor was just rough stone and mud. We didn’t have a proper whiteboard or even lighting in the rooms. The walls were cracked, and during the monsoon, water would leak through the roof. There were no proper water taps for drinking water. Everything felt damp, dark, and unsafe.”
But the renovations transformed everything.
“When I first walked into the newly renovated classroom, I honestly couldn’t believe my eyes,” Krishak said, holding back tears. “It was clean, bright, and beautiful. We had proper desks and benches for the children, chairs and a table for us teachers. The walls were strong, the floors were smooth, and the rain no longer leaked in. It felt like a dream.”
For Krishak, the change has been personal, too.
“I feel proud to be a teacher now more than ever. I feel seen. I feel supported. Thank you to everyone who heard our voices and helped us. We are doing our best to provide quality education, and now, we have a classroom that matches our hopes.”
A Partnership That Delivers Change
This project is the latest in a growing partnership between K&A and AFN. Over the past three years, they’ve brought clean water to underserved communities, powered health centers with solar energy, and through this school project have given children a safe, dignified space to grow and learn.
Together, we are addressing urgent needs and building lasting change, community by community.
