(White Plains, NY) – K&A Engineering Consulting, a utilities consulting firm, today announced that is has fully unwound its acquisition of Firefly, a technology offering that provides utility and power companies an integrated application for grid modernization that can manage and modify data in a single platform with turn-key delivery. K&A, via its K&A Technology Solutions business, acquired Firefly in March of 2021, which acquisition included onboarding Firefly’s creator and lead developer of Firefly, Mr. Andrew Davis.
In May of 2021, Mr. Davis and his wholly-owned company, EnergyBill.com LLC, filed a lawsuit in federal court against a former client, Arcadis, a relationship which predated K&A’s acquisition, regarding the ownership of Firefly. The suit was settled out of court under confidential terms in which the parties fully acknowledged Mr. Davis as the sole owner of Firefly and all related intellectual property.
Following differences in the desired integration of Firefly into K&A’s businesses which arose during the course of the settlement discussions, Mr. Davis and K&A have parted ways with full ownership and control of Firefly being returned to Mr. Davis for its continued development and success.
Firefly has two main use-cases. The first is automated design of a company’s overhead power distribution systems. The technology creates a virtual, 3D model of the company’s entire power grid based on asset records and allows for management of all grid assets including power generation, transmission, and distribution. It can also model gas, hydroelectric, wind, and solar power applications. Additionally, Firefly enables a company to plan and track engineering, expansions, construction, reviews, maintenance, and work orders. Firefly integrates with all business tools, such as SAP, saving time and increasing efficiency on any project being done.
The second use-case is for disaster recovery. After a storm event, with the use of a drone or other flight vehicle to take point cloud data, Firefly builds an image of any damage that was done in the storm and its A.I. technology allows for damaged infrastructure and assets to be identified and located in real-time, optimizing the deployment of field workers to perform repairs and ultimately dramatically reducing recovery costs. In addition to the two use-cases, Firefly offers database synchronization and collaboration that speeds up typically slow and unreliable data connections and allows for multi-level team collaboration. Reporting and customized training is also available through Firefly, which can be customized to meet a client’s needs.
K&A wishes Mr. Davis our best and great success in all his future endeavors as he continues the development and implementation of Firefly as he envisions it.
