Storm Safety Tips During Outages

  • Invests in flashlights and stock up on extra batteries. Keep these in the same place.
  • The National Fire Prevention Association does NOT recommend candles; however, if you must use a candle, be sure to light in a safe area. (Keep candles and matches stored together.)
  • According to the National Fire Prevention Association:
    1. Use candles that do not tip over easily.
    2. Keep candles on a sturdy surface.
    3. Do not burn the candle all the way down. Put it out before it gets too close to the candle holder.
    4. Never use a candle if oxygen is used in the home.
  • Stock up on warm clothing and blankets.
  • Stock up on bottled water.
  • Fill up your tubs and sinks with water if you have an electric water pump.
  • Stock up on canned goods and dry foods.
  • Keep your electronics charged in advance of a storm.
  • Layered clothing is a great way to stay warm.
  • Routinely inspect and maintain your chimney and furnace and keep them clean.
  • Check the batteries on your smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detectors.
  • Prepare BEFORE you lose electricity!
